San Martino di Castrozza si trova nella valle di Primiero, al limite orientale di quella che è oggi la Provincia Autonoma di Trento, territorio che, all’epoca del nostro excursus storico, faceva parte dell’Impero Austro-Ungarico ed era conosciuto come Welschtirol o Tirolo Italiano. La valle, per la sua configurazione e conformazione orografica, era abbastanza isolata dal contesto geografico limitrofo a cui era collegata tramite percorsi sterrati di ardua percorribilità. Nella seconda metà del XIX secolo l’amministrazione austriaca diede il via alla costruzione di vere e proprie strade carrabili che aprirono il territorio ad un confronto più intenso con le realtà confinanti. Con l’apertura, nel 1873, della strada di collegamento tra Primiero e Predazzo inizia il futuro turistico di San Martino. La località diviene facilmente raggiungibile dalla Val di Fiemme o dal fondovalle, tramite corse giornaliere di carrozze, dapprima postali e poi di trasporto pubblico. Con l’arrivo dei mezzi a motore la salita verso l’alta valle diviene più agevole ed apre nuovi orizzonti allo sviluppo economico di tutto il territorio. Il turismo diviene da allora il vero motore trainante dell’economia valligiana. Vediamo nelle seguenti immagini le tappe di avvicinamento alla “Perla delle Dolomiti”.

San Martino di Castrozza liegt im Primör-Tal, am östlichen Rand der heutigen Autonomen Provinz Trient, die zur Zeit unserer „Reise in die Geschichte“ zu Österreich-Ungarn gehörte und als Welschtirol bzw. Tirolo Italiano (italienisches Tirol) bekannt war. Das Tal war wegen seines geographischen und orographischen Charakters von den angrenzenden Gebieten ziemlich abgelegen und ausschließlich durch schwer befahrbare Straßen erreichbar. In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jh. ließ die österreichische Regierung moderne Straßen bauen, was zu intensiveren Kontakten mit den anliegenden Tälern führte. 1873 wurde die Straße zwischen Predazzo und Primör eröffnet: so fing der Tourismus in San Martino an. San Martino war also durch Post- und später auch Personenkutschen von Fiera di Primiero oder vom Fleimstal aus leicht erreichbar, was mit der Verbreitung der Motor-Fahrzeuge noch schneller wurde. Das führte dazu, dass sich der Tourismus als allerwichtigste Ressource der örtlichen Wirtschaft entwickelte. Auf den folgenden Bildern sind die verschiedenen Wege bzw. San Martino is located in the Primiero valley,  on the Eastern boundary of the Trentino Autonomous Region, land which, at the time of our historical excursus, belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was called Welschtirol or Italian Tirol.

Due to its orographic conformation, the valley was rather secluded from neighbouring regions and linked with steep dirt roads. In the middle of XIX century, the Austrian administration began to build real paved roads which allowed more exchanges with the neighbouring areas.

When in 1873 the road connecting Primiero with Predazzo is opened, the touristic future of San Martino starts. The village is then easy to reach from the Fiemme valley or from Primiero, through daily horse carriage-rides, initially mail service coaches, then for public transport. At the advent of first motor-cars, the ascent to the high valley becomes effortless and opens new horizons for the economic development. Tourism becomes thereafter the real driving force of the whole area. We see in the following pictures the approach to “THE PEARL OF THE DOLOMITES”.
